Tongue Hold Exercise


 

  • Curl the tongue back, and connect the underside of the tongue behind the alveolar ridge, keeping the tongue and jaw soft and relaxed. See diagram.

  • Maintain the contact whilst you say the days of the week, and then the months of the year. Use the muscles around the lips to articulate and try to avoid any tension in the jaw and tongue. Repeat twice.

  • Let the connection go and freely say the days of the week and the months of the year. You should notice the sound seems to be more forward focused, and more connected with the muscles of the lips.

  • Gently connect the tongue tip with the alveolar ridge, keeping the tongue and the jaw soft and relaxed.

  • Maintain the contact, whilst you say the days of the week and then the months of the year. Use the muscles around the lips to articulate, and try to avoid any tension in the jaw and tongue. Repeat several times.

  • Let the connection go, and freely say the days of the week and the months of the year. You should notice the sound seems to be more forward focused, and more connected with the muscles of the lips – a little more English in other words.
